Possibilities & Expectations of the LG Sonic for cooling tower treatment: LG Sonic devices control the bacterial population in cooling tower systems by severely inhibiting biofilm formation. This provides a large market potential in cooling water treatment applications. It is well known that Legionella bacteria propagate by reproducing within a larger organism like parasites, cyanobacteria etc. Biofilm [...]View Post
Cooling Tower, algae and biofilm control
“Efficiently lowers algae, biofilm formation, bacterial counts and chemical consumption.”
When temperatures are high, for example in cooling towers, a matrix of different microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, EPS and algae can grow very rapidly. The disadvantages of biofilm formation in cooling towers can be enormous. Therefore water used in cooling towers needs frequent treatment and chemical shocks to keep levels of micro-organisms to a minimum.
The LG Sonic products prevent the formation of biofilm and algae, which decreases the need for biocide dosage. Besides that, the reaction between chemicals and reagent is improved due to the presence of certain ultrasonic frequencies, leading to a more efficient chemical treatment and thus a lower consumption.
Algae growing in the cooling tower basin can efficiently be controlled by installing one or more LG Sonic products in the basin.
Within the reach of the ultrasonic sound waves, LG Sonic prevents the formation of biofilm. Thus, a local treatment to biofilm can be given by aiming an LG Sonic at the surface that needs biofilm prevention.
How does it work?
Biocide reductionWhen bacteria, algae and biofilm are reduced, as a result, the dosage of biocide can also be reduced. Cooling towers that are being treated with LG Sonic, generally have lower BOD5 and COD levels, even when water with a high COD is being used as make-up water.
Biofilm controlBiofilm formation starts by bacteria attaching to a surface. The ultrasonic sound waves of LG Sonic create resonance around the solid surfaces within the water, thereby preventing bacteria to adhere to a surface. Thus, the rest of the life cycle of the biofilm is also being prevented. EPS, present in an existing biofilm, is directly targeted, degrading the biofilm.
Algae controlUsing scientifically proven frequencies selectively, LG Sonic targets green and (toxic) blue-green algae. Components of algae cells, within the range of LG Sonic, oscillate on the sound frequencies. This leads to tearing of different cell organelles such as the vacuole’s tonoplast, cell wall or membrane and the gas vesicles of blue-green algae.
Installation in a cooling tower.
Install LG Sonic directly in the basin to treat corners and biofouling
Depending on the size and capacity of the cooling tower, 1 LG Sonic e-XL plus or e-XXL plus is installed per cell of the tower.
The LG Sonic products are being installed within the cooling tower basin itself, unlike a UV or filter that will need a bypass or side stream of the tower.
Therefore, the LG Sonic products do also control the algae and biofilm that attach themselves to the walls and floor of the basin.
