E.S.P., la empresa de servicios p\u00fablicos responsable del suministro de agua potable a aproximadamente 15 municipios de la regi\u00f3n de Barranquilla, ha instalado dos MPC-Buoys en la D\u00e1rsena R\u00edo Magdalena, una toma de agua clave en el <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magdalena_River\">r\u00edo Magdalena<\/a>. El agua sin tratar se recoge en la D\u00e1rsena R\u00edo Magdalena, una cuenca semicerrada conectada al r\u00edo, antes de ser bombeada a cinco plantas de tratamiento de agua potable que abastecen a la regi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zw-paragraph heading0\" data-header=\"0\" data-textformat=\"{&quot;fgc&quot;:&quot;rgb(0, 0, 0)&quot;,&quot;size&quot;:&quot;12.00&quot;,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;text&quot;}\" data-margin-bottom=\"12pt\" data-margin-top=\"12pt\" data-hd-info=\"0\" data-line-height=\"1.2\">Dado que la cuenca est\u00e1 separada del r\u00edo principal, que tiene un caudal r\u00e1pido, el agua se mueve mucho m\u00e1s lentamente en su interior. Aunque esto permite que las part\u00edculas m\u00e1s pesadas se depositen, tambi\u00e9n crea condiciones tranquilas y casi estancadas donde las algas pueden proliferar f\u00e1cilmente. El r\u00edo en s\u00ed mismo transporta grandes cantidades de sedimentos y se ve afectado por los vertidos dom\u00e9sticos, industriales y comerciales de Barranquilla y Soledad. Durante las lluvias intensas, se arrastran a\u00fan m\u00e1s sedimentos al r\u00edo y se transportan a la cuenca, lo que aumenta la carga de los procesos de tratamiento aguas abajo. Esto llev\u00f3 a la empresa de servicios p\u00fablicos a buscar soluciones que abordaran el problema en su origen, antes de que el agua llegara a las plantas de tratamiento.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zw-paragraph heading0\" data-header=\"0\" data-textformat=\"{&quot;fgc&quot;:&quot;rgb(0, 0, 0)&quot;,&quot;size&quot;:&quot;12.00&quot;,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;text&quot;}\" data-margin-bottom=\"12pt\" data-margin-top=\"12pt\" data-hd-info=\"0\" data-line-height=\"1.2\">A nivel interno, la empresa de servicios p\u00fablicos se enfrentaba a retos adicionales. Se acumulaban algas en el interior de los grandes tanques de sedimentaci\u00f3n utilizados durante el tratamiento, lo que obligaba a realizar paradas peri\u00f3dicas para su limpieza y aumentaba los costos operativos. El uso intensivo de productos qu\u00edmicos a base de cloro tambi\u00e9n dejaba en ocasiones un sabor desagradable en el agua tratada.
