LG Sonic, a Dutch manufacturer of algae control systems, received an award for their innovative approach to control algae with ultrasound technology. The annual “Going the Extra Mile” (GEM) awards were hosted by Northumbrian Water, a UK Water Utility company supplying water in both the north and south of England. The event took place at the Beamish Hall on Thursday 25 June 2015.
The event which is in it is fourth year celebrates the excellent work and achievements of supplies and contractors of NWG who have helped contribute to their success over the last 12 months. During the ceremony LG Sonic received the creative award for an algae control project in a washwater lagoon in Chigwell, United Kingdom, where a MPC-Buoy, an environmentally system to monitor and control harmful algal blooms with the use of ultrasonic technology, is recommended in order to improve the water quality.
According NWG the judging process was this year quite difficult; “we had 50% more entries than in previous years and all were of a very high quality. The judging panel managed to shortlist for the 8 award categories and the winners and finalists were invited onto the stage to receive their trophies from Heidi Mottram CEO” (NWG).
Monitor, Predict and Control Harmful Algal Blooms
The MPC-Buoy is a floating solar-powered system that combines continuous water quality monitoring, web-based software, and ultrasonic technology to effectively control harmful algal blooms in large water surfaces, such as lakes and drinking water reservoirs. At this moment, the MPC-Buoy is installed in lakes and water reservoirs in, among other countries, the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Poland. In 2015 LG Sonic received several innovation awards such as the global TAG excellence award from Isle Utilities and the Shell LiveWIRE Award from Shell and the Dutch Chamber of Commerce.
