Windsor Lake Takes Smart Action Against Harmful Algae Blooms

Windsor Lake is more than a recreational hotspot, it’s a vital part of the region’s watershed and environmental well-being. To protect this important resource from harmful algae blooms, the Town of Windsor, Colorado, has adopted a forward-thinking, science-based approach. By installing LG Sonic MPC-Buoys, the town has already started challenging the problem at its root. These innovative devices are designed to prevent harmful algal blooms (HABs) before they form, helping to maintain healthy water quality for both people and wildlife.

The Growing Challenge of Algae

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, are naturally present in many freshwater lakes. However, when warm temperatures, stagnant water, and excess nutrients combine, they can multiply rapidly, resulting in toxic algal blooms that threaten ecosystems and public health. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies stormwater runoff—often carrying nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers, pet waste, and urban areas—as the leading cause of water pollution nationwide. In Windsor, recurring blooms over the past few summers have forced temporary lake closures, disrupting recreation and raising concern among residents.

A Non-Chemical Solution

To proactively address the problem, Windsor installed four MPC-Buoys among other technologies offered by LG Sonic. These solar-powered systems that use ultrasonic sound waves to control algae growth without chemicals. These pulses disrupt the buoyancy of algae cells, causing them to sink and die naturally before they can release toxins. Each buoy monitors a 1,600-foot area and is anchored in parts of the lake most prone to bloom formation.

Equipped with advanced sensors, the buoys continuously measure temperature, pH, turbidity, and chlorophyll concentration. The collected data is transmitted in real time to both local staff and LG Sonic’s research team in the Netherlands to control harmful algae blooms. This allows for predictive monitoring and quick intervention when algae levels begin to rise. The technology is safe for humans, pets, fish, and wildlife, and supports the town’s goal of reducing chemical use in lake management.

Part of a Long-Term Environmental Vision

The deployment of LG Sonic buoys forms part of Windsor’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). This is a long-term investment framework that prioritizes public health, sustainable infrastructure, and environmental quality. By integrating smart water technology into this plan, the town is taking a data-driven, preventative approach to protecting its natural assets. These efforts not only help keep Windsor Lake open for recreation but also safeguard downstream waterways and enhance long-term water resource management.

Supporting a Healthier Watershed: The MPC-Buoys work alongside a suite of complementary environmental initiatives across the Windsor area. The town has implemented EutroSORB filter logs to absorb phosphorus from stormwater, launched a floating island pilot project that uses vegetation to remove nutrients directly from the lake, and employed GIS-based mapping tools to identify pollution sources. In addition, shoreline restoration projects are underway to stabilize banks and improve natural filtration. Together, these programs form a comprehensive strategy for cleaner water and a more resilient watershed.

Protecting the Community’s “Jewel”: As Deputy Town Manager Eric Lucas told CBS News Colorado, “Windsor Lake is the jewel of our system.” He emphasized that residents have invested heavily in creating a beautiful public space, and keeping it open and healthy. The buoy systems plays a key role in that mission. When sensors detect rising chlorophyll-a levels, the buoys automatically emit ultrasonic waves to push algae away from the surfac. Hence, preventing blooms before they disrupt recreational use.

Lucas also noted that the same technology is successfully used across Europe and in other Colorado lakes. It’s environmentally safe, non-invasive, and aligns perfectly with Windsor’s commitment to sustainability.
